From deckhand to captain, and now buying marine businesses.
My name is Damian Adcock. I've spent more than eight years in the yachting industry, and I'm based out of Florida, in the US.
I started as a deckhand, scrubbing decks and learning from the people who'd been doing it for decades. I worked my way up to captain. For nearly three years I was captain of a 62-foot solar-electric catamaran.
Along the way I came to rely on the businesses behind the boats: the yards and marinas, and the people who service life rafts and fire systems, crimp hoses, recondition propellers, stitch canvas and supply the parts. Many are family businesses, built over a lifetime. That's what I want to buy, look after and grow, with the people who built them continuing to lead the day-to-day.
Stewardship
Looking after someone else's asset is what I've always done.
A captain doesn't own the boat. The owner hands you something valuable and trusts you with it: the vessel, the crew, the budget and the safety of everyone aboard. Your job is to keep it all in good order, make sound decisions when nobody is watching, and be straight with the owner about what's going on.
That's how I think about buying your business. You're trusting me with something you built. I intend to look after it, and the people in it, with the same care.
